What is a Building Envelope System?

The building envelope refers to the outer shell or “skin” of a building. The physical components that make up the envelope include the foundation, roof, walls, doors, windows, ceilings, and related barriers and insulation. These components work together to prevent air, noise, light, and water from negatively affecting the building climate thereby maintaining a safe, comfortable indoor environment.

To optimize climate and indoor control of a building, there are six core systems that must be in good standing and working together. These systems are (1) structural support, (2) weather and moisture control, (3) airflow, (4) temperature control, (5) energy efficiency, and (6) noise reduction and sound proofing.

The info-graphic below explains how the building envelope systems help protect the commercial building and what do if it fails. It was provided by Landmark Restorations.
